Roshtqal’a District is located in eastern Tajikistan, in the south-western part of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO). The population of Roshtqal’a District is roughly 25,700 people. Roshtqal’a, as is the case with other districts of GBAO, consists of seven Jamoats. One of them is Tusyan, which has a population of roughly 2866 people. Tusyan Jamoat consists of 14 villages. One of them is Tusyan village.

School #12 in Tusyan has a school gym close to it, but unfortunately the schoolchildren cannot use it as the construction of this gym was started in early 1990s and was not completed because of the collapse of The Soviet Union. Consequently, the schoolchildren and the youth of this Jamoat had to use the uncompleted building as gym for about 26 years. In 2014, the youth, administration of the school, and the local government of the village asked Central Asia Institute Tajikistan to refurbish the school for the schoolchildren and the youth. In 2016, CAI Tajikistan started the rehabilitation of the school gym. Once the renovations are complete, teenagers spend more time in constructive activities and have new opportunities to participate in sport competitions. The school gym consists of big hall, boy and girl locker rooms, and a room for equipment.

Navruzmamd Haydarov has worked with CAIT as its engineer since 2012. Prior to joining CAIT, Navruzmamad worked with agencies of the local government of GBAO as an architect and senior engineer for 36 years. He was also involved with other non-governmental organizations as an engineer.
Navruzmamad holds his degree in Architecture and Engineering (1973) from Tajik Polytechnic Institute of Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
Navruzmamd has four children and lives with his family in Khorog. He enjoys spending his time drawing designs for different structures.

Mavlonazar Mavlonazarov has been the logistician at CAIT since 2012. He is responsible for procurement and inventory procedures. Mavlonazar joined CAIT after two year with the State Agency for Social Insurance and Pension.

Mavlonazar received his degree in Hydro Technical Infrastructures in 2010 from Khorog State University, GBAO, Tajikistan.

He lives in Khorog with his brothers and parents.

Manizha Khailobekova started with CAIT as finance officer in December 2014. Prior to joining CAIT, Manizha worked with FOCUS USA, an affiliate of Aga Khan Development Network, for 11 years.
She holds her degree in Biology (2001) and degree in Finance and Credit (2007) from Khorog State University, GBAO, Tajikistan.
Manizha lives in Khorog with her husband and three children.

Mahbuba Qurbonalieva is the country director for Central Asia Institute Tajikistan (CAIT). She joined CAIT in 2012 as the program and finance manager. After working in that position for two and a half years she was promoted to director in 2014.

Before coming to CAIT Mahbuba worked in various roles for FOCUS USA, an affiliate of Aga Khan Development Network, for 10 years. Prior to that she was office manager for Planning and Construction Management Project of the University of Central Asia in Khorog, GBAO, Tajikistan.
Mahbuba earned her degree in Linguistics from Khorog State University in 2001, and has a certificate in Accounting Technology from the University of Central Asia (2009), GBAO, Tajikistan.
Mahbuba lives with her husband and two children in Khorog. She loves to spend her weekends with her husband and children at the park in town.

Ayperi Kubanichbekova was born on April 27, 1993, in Murghab District, GBAO. She lives with her mother, grandmother, and younger brother. She studied in Murghab District at the school #1 until grade 10.
After 10th grade she was accepted to the Future Leaders Exchange Program (FLEX) and continued her studies in the consequent year in the USA. A year later, she came back to Tajikistan and continued her studies at the Aga Khan Lycee (AKL) in Khorog.
After graduating from secondary school Ayperi entered the Tajik Institute of Foreign Languages (TIFL) in Dushanbe. There she received a bachelor’s degree in foreign languages with a specialization in English. In 2013, Ayperi applied for CAI scholarship and became the first CAI scholarship student in Tajikistan. Ayperi has recently graduated from TIFL and hopes to get her master’s degree in law from the University of Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan.

Ishkashim District is located in the east of Tajikistan and in the south-west of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast. It borders Afghanistan, separated from its neighbor by the Panj River to the south and to the west. Zong is one of Ishkashim’s jamoats with a population of close to 1800 people. Zong Jamoat is strategically situated where the Pamir and Wakhan Rivers join the Panj River.
Langar is one of the villages of Zong Jamoat of Ishkashim District. The village faces several problems where education is concerned, a lack of space to accommodate all students in the area. For this reason, Central Asia Institute Tajikistan started the construction of a new school building. The building has 12 rooms – 10 classrooms and two offices, one for the principal and one for the teachers. This project solved one of the biggest problems with education in Langar village. The construction began in 2012 and was completed in 2013.

Over the last decade, the government of Tajikistan has taken steps to improve the water supply and sanitation in remote areas, but problems persist. Access to water services is now 90% in urban areas, but only 47% in rural areas. Water quality is irregular and service interruptions are frequent. Only 14% of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) has access to centralized sanitation. The remote regions of GBAO don’t have access to water services and the sanitation there does not meet hygiene standards. That is why hepatitis, diarrhea and other gastro-intestinal diseases have become an everyday occurrence.
Problems related to water supply and sanitation in several districts – Murghab and Shugnan – were brought to the attention of CAIT. The projects that came out of this, aim to improve the health status of children in remote region of GBAO through the provision of safe drinking water and the promotion of better hygiene practices. After constructing schools in those area CAIT then provides them with clean drinking water. In Vanqala village in Shugnan, the school was given proper plumbing which gave them access to clean water and in Kona Kurgan village there a drinking well was constructed. Now the children are happy to have water for hand washing and drinking.

Besides the construction of new schools in 2013 CAIT also constructed toilets in remote regions. For years, almost all students of remote areas of GBAO have used makeshift, open-air toilets in the schoolyard. The toilets were overflowing and had a terrible smell that made it difficult to breath. Consequently, schoolchildren to go to the bathroom being large boulders close to the school, which created an unsanitary environment and had negative repercussions when it came to student and faculty health. The lack of toilets created a heightened risk of gastrointestinal diseases and respiratory disorders in the community. But this is nothing new. According to a government report, primary schools have suffered these conditions for decades. After the construction of toilets by CAIT, these problems all but disappeared.

CAIT is focusing its attention on promoting education, especially girls’ education, in the mountainous regions of Tajikistan. The older schoolchildren of the remote regions of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) participated in courses on English, Russian, and computer science while staying in Khorog for one month. These courses were organized and financed by CAIT in collaboration with partner organization Nur. The courses were conducted at the Presidential school and were attended by 44 students from Zhamak village of Vanj District, Vanqala village of Shugnan District, Kona-Kurgan village of Murghab District and Langar village of Ishkashim District. The purpose of these courses was to increase the knowledge of the schoolchildren and to help them in applying to universities after secondary school. After finishing these courses schoolchildren made good marks on exams which then helped them apply to universities.
