Shugnan District is located in the central western part of Gorno- Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast in Tajikistan. The population of Shugnan district is approximately 38,000 people. Shugnan, as is the case with other districts of GBAO, consists of Jamoats or municipalities. One of them is Vanqala. Vanqala is 110 km from Khorog, where Central Asia Tajikistan has its office.
Vanqala is a large territory and contains many villages. The villages are sparsely populated and homes are far from each other. The only school of the village had dilapidated classrooms and not safe for the schoolchildren. The children from other villages 2-3 km away attend the same school, and it is very difficult for the young children to walk 4-6 km every day, especially in the winter. This was one of the reasons why schoolchildren were not attending classes. In 2012, Central Asia Institute Tajikistan started construction of a new secondary school for the schoolchildren of Vanqala Jamoat. The school was built in the middle of the villages, and the distance is now the same for everyone. The school consists of 12 classes: 10 classrooms and two offices, one for the principal and one for the teachers.
